Can you perform body modifications, painting, or transmission tune-ups?

I'm no auto expert, how do I know what I need to check and when

What type of maintenance is more important than others?

Unfortunately, we can't offer those services at this time, but we do specialize in exhaust, brake, and tire services so we can be your one-stop maintenance destination.
Our mechanics take that hassle off of your shoulders! Bring your car to us with as much information as you can provide about when the issues started. We'll diagnose the problem and set you up with knowledge about what to be aware of!
Regular maintenance is always important for your car. Taking care of issues as they crop up pays off the most- it's hard to weigh out priorities when the parts work as a whole. Try to be aware of when your car runs differently, and keep track of recent maintenance!

Why Terry’s Auto Service?

After-Hours Drop Off Hassle-Free Convenience

Why is it better to have routine maintenance done at a car repair shop rather than at a quick lube sort of facility?

The staff at Terry's Auto Service stands by the auto repair services they provide; therefore, customers have peace of mind in knowing their vehicles are in trustworthy, skilled, caring hands. For the best prices in the Des Moines area, friendly service, and skillful, experienced ASE-certified mechanics, Terry's is the number one choice. Call 515-255-4041 to learn more and discover why Terry's is the area's best automotive service center.
Sometimes auto repair needs arise long after most auto repair shops have closed (most auto repair shops close at 6 pm). Terry's Auto Service offers the flexibility of a 24-hour key drop box that allows customers to bring their vehicles in according to their own schedule. With after-hours drop off services, you leave your car at the mechanics shop for repair even if the shop has closed. You simply fill out an envelope, put in your keys, and drop it in a drop box. We will contact you when your car is ready or when they need additional information. At Terry’s Auto Service, we value your convenience and that is why we offer after-hours drop off services. Even if we have closed, you just drop-off your vehicle at our shop and our mechanics will work on it and contact you when it is ready.
The employees at franchised facilities are often trained to strictly do oil changes. Compare that level of competence with car repair mechanics who are all certified ASE and have been professionally trained and know what to look for. Your vehicle will thank you for the attention of a real mechanic, even for routine oil changes.

How often should I get my car tuned up?

Does my coolant REALLY need to be changed periodically?

Every car is different and you should consult your owner's manual to answer this. That said, most cars require a tune-up approximately once every 60,000 miles.
Yes. When coolant ages, it becomes acidic. This can create problems when the acid starts to eat away your gaskets and seals.

Why is it so important to change fuel filters?

Do you tow vehicles?

Can you look over a car that I am looking at purchasing to make sure that it is mechanically sound?

When fuel filters plug up, even a little bit, it makes your fuel pump work harder causing it to overheat and fail. On newer cars, fuel pumps can easily cost $500 to even a $1000 to replace. Keep 'em clean!
Yes, we have a towing service and can get you off the side of the street and into our repair shop, quickly!
Yes, our certified technicians would be happy to look over your prospective car purchase. We offer a free “pre-buy” inspection. Our inspection will help you make an informative buying decision.

I have a flat tire, can you help?

What does it mean if my "check engine" or "service engine soon" light comes on?

Why rotate your tires and how often?

Absolutely! Tires are our business. Bring in your vehicle with any tire issue, including flats. We will look to see if we can repair the tire first. Often, this can be done while you wait. If we cannot repair the tire we will work with you to replace the tire.
Your tires should be rotated every other oil change, or every 6000 miles. Neglecting to rotate tires is a major cause of premature tire wear. Rotating existing tires to new positions evens out wear and maximizes the life of each tire. It helps to distribute wear more evenly because each position wears the tires in different places.
There are many sensors and computerized components that manage your vehicle's engine performance and emissions. When one of these fails, the "check engine" light is illuminated. Although your car may seem to run fine, it is important to have the issue addressed to prevent long-term problems.

When should I get my oil changed?

You should get your oil changed every 3000 miles or as recommended in your vehicle's owner's manual.

How often should windshield wiper blades be replaced?

I have a European car, are you equipped to service it?

Do I have to get regularly scheduled maintenance done by the dealer?

To be safe, wiper blades should be replaced every 6-9 months. The soft rubber that makes up windshield wipers breaks down over time and loses effectiveness. Worn or damaged windshield wipers can pose a serious safety hazard by reducing visibility.
Yes. We are a full-service repair facility and offer repair and maintenance on most makes and models. Bring your car in and let Terry’s Auto Service take a look.
No. You can have your car serviced anywhere to maintain the warranty requirements as outlined in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Be sure to keep copies of all receipts as a record of services performed. Terry’s precisely follows each vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.

My A/C isn’t blowing cold. Can you fix this?
